LENA AND HER DOLL'S HOUSE

"The stitches emancipate themselves; they join together, and I merely carry out the work," says Jürg Benninger, who lives and works in Geneva.

Out of this process emerge dreamlike crocheted sculptures: bizarre heads arranged in groups, falling bodies, or Siamese twins whose hat replaces a face. Some of Benninger's textile sculptures are as small and inconspicuous as the overlooked bodybuilder Paul, while others possess an impressive monumental presence, such as the dragon Lena.

The eight-metre-long creature has, instead of a dragon's head, a large suction cup, combining humour, poetry, and surreal imagination in a unique sculptural language.
