Dirty Play
"Life in Cuba is one big challenge", says artist Carla Maria Bellido. And the young woman is taking on this challenge. She contrasts her "relatively surreal life" in Havana with Western consumer society motifs which are even omnipresent in communist Cuba thanks to television and the internet, and is perceived as having a power of promise which it lost with us. From this, pictures are created which allow familiar things to appear in a fascinatingly strange form. Regular visitors to the Vitrine are already familiar with Carla Maria Bellido. She was one of the eight Cuban artists that we introduced in a group exhibition. Now, the vitrine is playing host to her oeuvres alone in oil and acrylic and so much shall be revealed: the 25-year-old keeps the promise that she made to us a year ago. At the vernissage, you have the opportunity to greet the artist personally.
