Wood Carving & Souvenirs
Felix Kuhn likes to play with remembrance. His website displays alternating pictures of the months, from January to December. These twelve works are like barriers in the stream of time. They remind the observer of past days and weeks. Some of these “souvenirs” are on view at the Vitrine gallery in company with woodcarvings by Alois Hermann. Solid wooden sculptures of heads and human figures stand by themselves, form pairs or are arranged in groups. They seem to be immersed in contemplation of the pictures around them.
Perhaps you remember Felix Kuhn’s cube of concrete, steel and glass, a project that had won an official competition “art in public space” in Lucerne some years ago. In Alois Hermann’s view the space around a figure starts to talk from the moment the figure is erected. Felix Kuhn’s block designed for a public area has never been realized. So this particular space has remained silent. However, Kuhn’s present drawings, illustrations and oil paintings give an idea of the story he might have told us.
