30 YEARS OF AGITATION
The angry citizen can also be friendly, he begins his monologue with a jovial “Grüezi”. But it doesn't help. He goes off the rails and talks himself out of his mind in just over two minutes, trapped in a kitschy snow globe with a Swiss cross and the Matterhorn. The work was released in 1995, caused a lot of discussion and is considered a classic of Swiss animation film. Jonas Raeber's reckoning with a patriotism that rhymes love of country with xenophobia is as relevant as ever. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of its premiere, the Vitrine Gallery is now exhibiting the frames, the hand-drawn individual images of “Grüezi”. Raeber's latest work will also be on display. It is called “Der Käfig” (The Cage) and tells the story of a little boy and his parrot.
