It all started with a fold
Group exhibitions in Cape Town and Miami, permanent exhibitions in Tokyo and Beromünster: 37-year-old Sipho Mabona from Lucerne shifts between worlds. As an origami artist, he combines craft with art, Far Eastern meditation with Western rationality. Mabona started with simple and then ever more complex folded objects. In the meantime, he has developed a wide range of expressive forms. He works, for example, with negatives of folded patterns and creates sculptures made out of sand, plaster of Paris, sugar or bronze; or he experiments with so-called circle packing. In the process, he just uses the folded edges as axes on a canvas around which acrylic paint rings runs that merge into organic shapes. Basically, says Mabona, the story of his life unfolds in his work. It is worth a listen.
