Romuald Etter (*1959, Zug, Switzerland) lives and works in Lucerne and Berlin.
He is considered one of the most prominent contemporary artists in the field of painting on glass. His works extend far beyond the classical boundaries of traditional reverse-glass painting: In a complex, two-sided creative process, Etter combines multi-layered color mixtures (mixed media) with textile applications and precise screen-printed elements.
In this context, the glass serves not merely as a medium for the image, but as an energetic resonating space. Through the interplay of condensed matter, light, and transparency, a distinctive visual language of extraordinary luminosity emerges. It is a form of painting that unfolds a subtle metaphysical depth and physically transforms the surrounding space in a tangible way.
Etter drew formative inspiration during international studio residencies in Berlin, Paris, and Dakar. His work has been honored with, among other awards, the “Werkjahr” and several art grants from the Canton of Zug, as well as the Recognition Award from the City of Lucerne.
