Artists see themselves as members of the avant-garde. But how do we know what is new if we forget where we come from? The Lucerne artist Roland Pirk Bucher had always been conscious of the close correlation of tradition with innovation. He had never denied that he was standing on the shoulders of others. Names like Leonardo, Albrecht Dürer, Raffael and Velasquez were his models, and he studied them with as much respect as humour. His oil paintings take a bearing on this classical heritage, and it is from this heritage that they draw their relevance.
